Often people think it means a vegetarian diet, or a diet high in whole grains and legumes. Although those diets can be &#8220;whole foods&#8221;, so are many others.<\/p>\n<p>So I prefer to call it a &#8220;real food&#8221; diet, which can encompass the full range of foods. Sean Croxton of <a href=\"http:\/\/undergroundwellness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Underground Wellness<\/a> coined the phrase JERF &#8211; &#8220;Just Eat Real Food&#8221; and at this stage of your nutrition\u00a0journey, that may be all you need to focus on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/deb-gully\/files\/2016\/06\/Paleo-dietb.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/deb-gully\/files\/2016\/06\/Paleo-dietb2-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-774\" src=\"http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/deb-gully\/files\/2016\/06\/Paleo-dietb2-1.jpg\" alt=\"paleo-dietb2\" width=\"775\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/deb-gully\/files\/2016\/06\/Paleo-dietb2-1.jpg 775w, http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/deb-gully\/files\/2016\/06\/Paleo-dietb2-1-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/deb-gully\/files\/2016\/06\/Paleo-dietb2-1-768x508.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 775px) 100vw, 775px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Real foods are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Animal proteins:\n<ul>\n<li>Meat, poultry, fish<\/li>\n<li>Broths<\/li>\n<li>Eggs<\/li>\n<li>Dairy, preferably unpasteurised or fermented<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Fats that can be found in nature:\n<ul>\n<li>Fat gathered from your roast<\/li>\n<li>Butter or ghee<\/li>\n<li>Coconut oil, olive oil<\/li>\n<li><em>Most other plant oils should be avoided &#8211; ask yourself &#8220;could my great grandma have made this oil in her kitchen?&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Plant foods that haven&#8217;t been messed with:\n<ul>\n<li>Fruit<\/li>\n<li>Vegetables<\/li>\n<li>Fermented veges<\/li>\n<li>Nuts &amp; seeds (prepared properly)<\/li>\n<li>Whole grains and legumes\u00a0(prepared properly)<\/li>\n<li>Herbs &amp; Spices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Drinks that are not full of either sugar or artificial sweeteners<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They will ideally be fresh, local and organic, and will be free of GMOs and any artificial\u00a0additives.<\/p>\n<p>You may feel that you can start with this step\u00a0on your own, and there are many resources to help you. Also check out recipe sites that focus on WAPF (Weston A Price foundation), Paleo or Primal diets.<\/p>\n<p>But before you start, some extra\u00a0tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/deb-gully\/nutrition\/food-diary\/\">food diary<\/a> &#8211; this will help you see how you&#8217;re progressing. Also, if you later decide to come and see me, it will contain ve=aluable information, so I can help you with the next step.<\/li>\n<li>Start slowly. Make changes gradually, so you can adapt more easily physically and logistically.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you eat a balance of foods. At this stage, aim to have some protein, fat and carbs with each meal.
