Most of the guys now understand that we need to get the sugar out. We\u2019ve come a long way. I would say we are in a low-sugar environment. That\u2019s a big change. We now have nuts on the sideline after training, not lollies. I wouldn\u2019t say we\u2019ve made it all the way to high fat, but we have healthy fat on hand when we need it. We (the team) go through 6-7 tins of coconut oil a week. We travel with peanut butter and nut butters for the guys to use in smoothies and wherever else it can fit in\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d say most professional sports teams are now at least low sugar, lower to low carb. That\u2019s not always high fat, but its healthy fats. Nutrition for sport is really changing fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/profgrant.com\/author\/gschofie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prof. Grant Schofield<\/a> \u2013 November 2 2015<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>All Blacks win Rugby World Cup while eating a low sugar, healthy fat diet<\/h4>\n<p>Anyone would agree that the All Blacks\u2019 performance in the Rugby World Cup was amazing \u2013 they worked together like a well-oiled machine. And now it has come to light, under the influence of strength and conditioning coach, <a href=\"http:\/\/profgrant.com\/2015\/11\/02\/dr-nic-gill-low-carb-low-sugar-and-the-all-blacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Nicholas Gill<\/a>, that it was in fact a coconut-oiled-machine.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Nic Gill is on a LCHF diet himself \u2013 and has even done his last two Ironman challenges fat adapted, while eating some carbs during the events.<\/p>\n<p>He started experimenting with his diet two and a half years ago and what he discovered was that he was eating more out of habit than hunger; the principles he was experimenting with were based on the Paleo diet.<\/p>\n<p>The more he began listening to his body, the more he realised that eating fat at night meant that he was less hungry the next day, and in this way he could start to control his hunger, instead of the other way around. Eating like this also reduced his cravings and increased his overall wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>He says, \u201cThat\u2019s about it for me. I stay high on fat, and low on carbs pretty much the whole time, except in triathlons where I have some carbs. I eat whole, healthy foods. The only thing I avoid is milk. It upsets my stomach, so I\u2019ve replaced it with cream.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><img src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/rmrwebassets\/images\/uploads\/allblacks.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<p>He has taken these principles to the <a href=\"http:\/\/realmealrevolution.com\/real-thinking\/crouch-touch-pause-and-engage-banting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rugby field<\/a>. The team watched \u201cThat Sugar Film,\u201d which has had a huge impression on them and has made them realise that they need to remove the sugar from their diets, to increase performance and to live a healthier life \u2013 one change is that they now eat nuts after training, instead of lollies.<\/p>\n<p>The team also go through six to seven tins of <a href=\"http:\/\/realmealrevolution.com\/real-thinking\/oils-and-fats-which-to-avoid-and-which-to-use\" target=\"_&quot;blank&quot;\" rel=\"noopener\">coconut oil<\/a> a week and travel with peanut butter, and other nut butters, to use in smoothies and where ever else they can put it.<\/p>\n<p>He ends off by saying, \u201cI\u2019d say most professional sports teams are now at least low sugar, lower to low carb.
