Suitable for Paleo, GAPS, Clean Eating, low sugar<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>We first started making this protein slice a few years ago, as a way to make cod liver oil a more palatable supplement. One of our customers came up with the prototype recipe, and I\u2019ve tweaked it a few ways since. Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/recipes\/cod-liver-oil-jellies\/\">original recipe complete with cod liver oil<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you leave the cod liver oil out, it becomes a yummy, high protein snack bar.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a firm jelly texture, so a bit more interesting than your usual protein bar.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/recipes\/files\/2016\/10\/gut-healing-gummies.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1858\" src=\"http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/recipes\/files\/2016\/10\/gut-healing-gummies.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/recipes\/files\/2016\/10\/gut-healing-gummies.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/recipes\/files\/2016\/10\/gut-healing-gummies-300x175.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of its beneficial ingredients is coconut oil \u2013 the healthy fat component. If you\u2019ve tried my healthy chocolate recipe, or experimented yourself with coconut based snack bars, you\u2019ll know that a major disadvantage is that it melts if you try and carry it about. But in this combo, it\u2019s more stable.<\/p>\n<p>The protein comes from beef or pork gelatin. If you\u2019re strict vegetarian, you\u2019ll have to wait for some of my other snack bars. But if you\u2019re not, I prefer gelatin as a protein source to many of the processed protein powders.<\/p>\n<p>The added benefit of gelatin is that is helps to heal the gut.<\/p>\n<h4>Chocolate Gelatin Protein Bars<\/h4>\n<p><em>(If you&#8217;re in NZ and looking for sources, some of these products are available through our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturefoods.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature Foods online store<\/a>, and are linked to for your convenience. If there&#8217;s anything else you can&#8217;t find, ask us.)<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 cup water<\/li>\n<li>3 Tbs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturefoods.co.nz\/other-foods\/gelatin\/greatlakes-beef-gelatin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Lakes beef<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturefoods.co.nz\/other-foods\/gelatin\/greatlakes-porcine-gelatin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pork gelatin<\/a> (red or orange cans) *<\/li>\n<li>About \u00bd cup honey, maple syrup, coconut nectar or other natural sweetener (or reduce quantity for your taste)<\/li>\n<li>4 Tbs \/ \u00bc cup \/ 50 gm coconut oil<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup \/ 50gm raw cacao\u00a0(or cocoa) powder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Put the water in a medium sized pan. Sprinkle the gelatin over the top, bit by bit, letting it absorb into the water. If any stays dry, mix it in with a whisk. When it has softened and gone thick, heat the water gently, stirring till the gelatin has dissolved. Take off the heat and add the honey and coconut oil, stirring till dissolved. Whisk in the cacao. Put into a tray lined with baking paper and refrigerate. When set, cut into squares. Keeps in the fridge, in a lidded container, for at least a week.<\/p>\n<p><em>* You can use any other brand of gelatin, but the quantity required may be different.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Carob Protein Bars (sugar free option)<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Replace the cacao with 50gm carob powder<\/li>\n<li>Carob is naturally sweet, so you can reduce (or even eliminate) the sweetener<\/li>\n<li>Optional \u2013 25gm of mesquite powder makes it a bit caramelly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/recipes\/files\/2016\/10\/gelatin-slice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1856\" src=\"http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/recipes\/files\/2016\/10\/gelatin-slice.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"447\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/recipes\/files\/2016\/10\/gelatin-slice.jpg 447w, https:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/recipes\/files\/2016\/10\/gelatin-slice-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 447px) 100vw, 447px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Pimp Your Gelatin Slice<\/h4>\n<p>If you\u2019re on a restricted diet, and want a portable dessert-like snack to take to functions where you might not be able to eat much, one of the first two versions might be best for you.<\/p>\n<p>But there are lots of ways to make it more exciting. Try adding one or more of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Orange or lemon zest or extract<\/li>\n<li>Peppermint essence<\/li>\n<li>Dried fruit<\/li>\n<li>Freeze dried fruit \u2013 cherries or raspberries would be particularly nice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The gelatin bar in the photo is carob with \u00bc cup currants stirred in, &amp; crushed freeze dried raspberries on top<\/p>\n<h4>Fortify Your Gelatin Slice<\/h4>\n<p>If you take liquid supplements of any kind, they can be hidden, or at least diluted by adding them to this slice.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some suggestions for incorporating either Green Pasture or NutraPro cod or skate liver oil (the ones we use) into a gelatin slice. But the same process can be used for any other brands of cod liver oil, fish oils, liquid vitamins (we often add <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturefoods.co.nz\/supplements\/vitamins\/quantum-max-b-small\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">liquid B vitamins<\/a>), liquid <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturefoods.co.nz\/supplements\/minerals\/mri-mineral-drops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minerals<\/a> or any other liquid supplement.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make either the chocolate or carob basic recipe<\/li>\n<li>Let it cool down in the pan to about body temperature, but not so cool that it\u2019s set<\/li>\n<li>Whisk in 4-8 Tbs cod or skate liver oil (depending on how strong you can handle it) before pouring into the prepared tray. Suggested flavours:\n<ul>\n<li>For Jaffa, use either Green Pasture CLO Oslo Orange OR Skate Spicy Orange<\/li>\n<li>For Choc Cinnamon, use Green Pasture CLO Cinnamon<\/li>\n<li>For Choc Orange Cinnamon, use \u00bd CLO Cinnamon and \u00bd Skate Spicy Orange, to get the benefits of both oils<\/li>\n<li>For Choco Mint, use NutraPro Lemon\/Peppermint<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>When set, cut into 24-48 pieces, which will each have 1\/2 tsp of oil<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/recipes\/files\/2016\/10\/gummies-600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1857\" src=\"http:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/recipes\/files\/2016\/10\/gummies-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/recipes\/files\/2016\/10\/gummies-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/recipes\/files\/2016\/10\/gummies-600-300x269.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Gummy Citrus Stars<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>1\/3 cup lemon juice (about 3 large lemons) \u2013 you could actually use any citrus juice<\/li>\n<li>3 Tbs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturefoods.co.nz\/other-foods\/gelatin\/greatlakes-beef-gelatin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Lakes beef<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturefoods.co.nz\/other-foods\/gelatin\/greatlakes-porcine-gelatin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pork gelatin<\/a><\/li>\n<li>3 Tbs honey<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Put the lemon juice in a small pan and sprinkle the gelatin on top. When it\u2019s softened add the honey, and stir all together over a low heat till the gelatin is dissolved.<\/p>\n<p>You can pour it into a glass dish, put in the fridge till set, then cut it up into squares.<\/p>\n<p>Or you can use chocolate moulds. Put them in the freezer for a while, then into the fridge. I use the pointy end of a sharp knife to prise a corner out, and then peeled each one out.
