A vegan diet never sustained any traditional culture<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Dr. Weston Price, a dentist with a passion for nutrition, traveled the globe to discover the secrets of healthy, happy people. He recorded his findings in the 30\u2019s in the landmark book, <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1i5Wmg2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Nutrition and Physical Degeneration<\/em><\/a>. From the Inuit in Alaska to the Maori in New Zealand, Dr. Price revealed that <strong>the diets traditional to each culture, although dependent on geography, followed a strict set of dietary laws.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Perhaps the most striking commonality is an unerring reverence for animal foods.\u00a0<strong>No traditional culture subsisted on a vegan diet<\/strong>, a fact that Dr. Price found particularly interesting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Some cultures, such as the Masai tribe in Africa, consumed almost exclusively animal products. The Masai ate meat, milk and blood from their cattle,\u00a0experiencing profound health and incredible bone structure (which is an indicator of generational health). Cultures \u2013 such as the Inuit \u2013\u00a0that didn\u2019t\u00a0practice animal husbandry caught wild meat or fish. Groups who had the least access to animal products would forage for grubs and bugs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The China Study<\/strong> (which is a book title, not a study) has been used to promote the idea that primarily vegan cultures experience better health than omnivorous cultures.\u00a0T. Campbell, the\u00a0author,\u00a0notoriously cherry-picked data to\u00a0arrive at a specific conclusion. Vegetables provide carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, while animal sources such as liver and pastured egg yolks provide true vitamin A. Many people believe that carotene can be converted into vitamin A, but this conversion is usually insignificant. First, it takes a huge amount of carotene to convert to a moderate amount of vitamin A. The more you eat, the more\u2026 your hormones go berserk!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\">10 years ago, a vegan diet equated to vegetables interspersed with\u00a0soy milk, soy cheese, soy bacon, soy protein, soy cereal, tofu, and tempeh. Now, the health problems with chronic soy consumption are becoming more mainstream an<a href=\"https:\/\/empoweredsustenance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/edemame-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8175 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/empoweredsustenance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/edemame-2-300x204.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/empoweredsustenance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/edemame-2-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/empoweredsustenance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/edemame-2-540x366.jpg 540w, https:\/\/empoweredsustenance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/edemame-2-375x255.jpg 375w, https:\/\/empoweredsustenance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/edemame-2-500x340.jpg 500w, https:\/\/empoweredsustenance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/edemame-2-190x130.jpg 190w, https:\/\/empoweredsustenance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/edemame-2.jpg 810w\" alt=\"edemame 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a>d many vegans have reduced their soy consumption. Even so, a vegan diet often relies on a moderate amount of soy products \u00a0\u2013 especially soy protein powders and soy protein bars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\">The primary concern with consuming soy in any form is the <strong>phytoestrogen<\/strong> content. Phytoestrogens can mimic estrogen in the body, causing a chain reaction of hormone imbalances.\u00a0Although studies showing the hormonal effects of consuming soy are controversial, I believe the research indicates that we should play it safe rather than sorry. You can eat as much calcium as you want but it won\u2019t strengthen your bones unless it is accompanied by vitamin K2. This is one reason why calcium supplementation has been<a href=\"https:\/\/empoweredsustenance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/cheese-slice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8176\" src=\"https:\/\/empoweredsustenance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/cheese-slice-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"cheese slice\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a> shown to increase the risk of\u00a0plaque formation \u2013 the body can\u2019t use the calcium for building bones so it stores it in the arteries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Unlike vitamin K1, plants do not provide vitamin K2.<\/strong> (The one and only exception to this rule is natto, a fermented soybean product.\u00a0One problem, however, is that natto is, for the majority of humans and animals, repulsive to eat). Like other fat-soluble vitamins, Vitamin K2 is found fatty sources \u2013 Mother Nature packages the vitamin with the cofactors required to absorb it. I define it as choosing\u00a0sustainably-raised animal products from small, local producers. With a little planning and careful selection, can be relatively\u00a0budget-friendly. I think people should eat less meat, but a much higher quality to support the demand for pasture-raised meats. <strong>$1 hamburgers have no place in an ethical omnivore world.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Our ecosystem relies on a self-regulating\u00a0balance of \u00a0predators and prey. This system worked well with humans and their prey until we began inhumane farming practices that compromise the wellbeing of animals, the health of humans, and the health of the planet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\">But just like Confined Feeding Animal Operations aren\u2019t the answer to a healthy planet, neither is veganism. Vegan diets ten to demand\u00a0a higher quantity of cereal grains and soy, crops which wreak\u00a0havoc on our ecosystem due to mass farming techniques. With a slew of <strong>non-foods<\/strong> including stabilizers, gums, thickeners and highly processed protein extracts. Yummy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Let\u2019s\u00a0consider the example of<strong> Earth Balance<\/strong>, a non-dairy butter\u00a0often used in vegan diets.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<li class=\"p1\">Ingredients in\u00a0a Earth Balance: <em>Palm fruit oil, canola oil, safflower oil, flax oil, olive oil, salt, natural flavor, pea protein, sunflower lecithin, lactic acid, annatto color<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Ingredients in\u00a0butter: <em>butter<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Humans have been eating butter for thousands of\u00a0years. We\u00a0only started\u00a0producing\u00a0canola oil in the last century. Butter\u00a0is real food, but canola oil is\u00a0a freak of nature. Similarly, pea protein and natural flavors are highly processed non-foods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Fortunately, more and more people are becoming aware that processed vegan products\u00a0are just that \u2013 highly processed. I\u2019m living proof that it works!<\/strong> Three years ago, my ulcerative colitis was so advanced that my doctors wanted to remove my colon. Instead, I decided to do whatever it took to heal myself naturally. Now, I\u2019m completely symptom free (and colon intact!) thanks to my dietary changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\">All disease begins in the gut, and all disease must be addressed by improving gut health. For example, field mice were demolished\u00a0in order to grow the corn for a box of vegan cereal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Further, plants are living beings, capable of communicating with each other and the world around them. Controversial but intriguing research, discussed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dFYgue5VfGk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this documentary<\/a>, indicates that plants can even sense and respond to human emotions!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Nutritional Therapist Liz Wolf sums it up perfectly in her book <a href=\"https:\/\/empoweredsustenance.com\/eat-the-yolks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Eat the Yolks<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If we truly believe that no living thing should have to die for our dinner, we shouldn\u2019t eat at all. Testing with the most up-to-date methods show that 83% of vegans are B12 deficient, compared to 5% of omnivores.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>What about spirulina and brewer\u2019s yeast as a source of B12?<\/em>\u00a0Chris Kresser has an excellent post on <a href=\"http:\/\/chriskresser.com\/why-you-should-think-twice-about-vegetarian-and-vegan-diets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vegan diets and vitamin deficiencies<\/a> in which he addresses this question:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A common myth amongst vegetarians and vegans is that it\u2019s possible to get B12 from plant sources like seaweed, fermented soy, spirulina and brewers yeast. But plant foods said to contain B12 actually contain B12 analogs called cobamides that block the intake of, and increase the need for, true B12. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10552882\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Chris also discusses iron in his post. While plants such as lentils and leafy greens do provide some iron, it is not as well-absorbed as animal-based iron. He explains,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Vegetarians and vegans have lower iron stores than omnivores, and [\u2026] vegetarian diets have been shown to reduce non-heme iron absorption by 70% and total iron absorption by 85%. That may be true, but <strong>these plant sources provide a form of omega-3 that is not well absorbed by the body<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The omega-3 in plant sources, such as flaxseed and walnuts, is ALA. ALA must be converted to EPA or DHA in the body to be useable. Unfortunately, the conversion between ALA and EPA\/ DHA is extremely low. One study showed that women convert about 21% of ALA to EPA and 9% to DHA. The conversion rates for men are even lower.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Further,\u00a0as Chris Kresser points out in his article on <a href=\"http:\/\/chriskresser.com\/why-you-should-think-twice-about-vegetarian-and-vegan-diets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vegan nutrient deficiencies<\/a>, \u201cthe conversion of ALA to DHA depends on zinc, iron and pyridoxine\u2014nutrients which vegetarians and vegans are less likely than omnivores to get enough of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Fats from sustainably-raised animals provide unique health benefits not found in plant sources:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<li><strong>EPA and DHA<\/strong>, the active forms of omega-3 vital for cognitive function, are found only in animal sources such as fatty fish.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fat soluble vitamins A, D and K2<\/strong> are found in fatty animal products (discussed above).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cholesterol<\/strong>, a vital ingredient for healthy hormones, can be dietarily obtained only through animal sources. Yes, the body can produce cholesterol, but dietary cholesterol\u00a0is a key part of wellness including memory, liver health, and digestion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>But don\u2019t\u00a0cholesterol-rich saturated fats cause heart disease?<\/em> Nope! Saturated fats were wrongly blamed for heart disease with the help of poor research and\u00a0sleazy food politics.
