(Maybe)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/a_fat_evil_greedy_money_loving_man__xlarge1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-19599\" src=\"https:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/a_fat_evil_greedy_money_loving_man__xlarge1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"353\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/a_fat_evil_greedy_money_loving_man__xlarge1.jpeg 327w, https:\/\/www.frot.co.nz\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/a_fat_evil_greedy_money_loving_man__xlarge1-200x197.jpeg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 353px) 100vw, 353px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-7\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">Most applications that call themselves \u201cDeFi\u201d are built on top of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/learn\/ethereum-101\/what-is-ethereum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ethereum<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-9\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">That\u2019s because Ethereum\u2019 is set up for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/learn\/ethereum-101\/ethereum-smart-contracts-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">smart contracts<\/a> \u2013 which automatically execute transactions if certain conditions are met.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-11\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">With smart contracts at the core, dozens of DeFi applications are operating on Ethereum, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/ethereum-2-0-closer-than-ever-still-plenty-of-work-to-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ethereum 2.0<\/a>, a coming upgrade to Ethereum, could give these apps a boost by improving Ethereum\u2019s scalability issues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-12\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">The most popular types of DeFi applications include:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-13\" class=\"article-list\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Decentralized exchanges (DEXs)<\/strong>: Online exchanges help users exchange currencies for other currencies, whether U.S. dollars for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/price\/bitcoin\">bitcoin<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/price\/ethereum\">ether<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/price\/dai\">DAI<\/a>. DEXs are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/defi-flippening-uniswap-topples-coinbase-trading-volume\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hot<\/a> type of exchange, which connects users directly so they can trade cryptocurrencies with one another without trusting an intermediary with their money.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stablecoins<\/strong>: A cryptocurrency that&#8217;s tied to an asset outside of cryptocurrency (the dollar or euro, for example) to stabilize the price.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lending platforms<\/strong>: These platforms use smart contracts to replace intermediaries such as banks that manage lending in the middle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Wrapped&#8221; bitcoins (WBTC)<\/strong>: A way of sending bitcoin to the Ethereum network so the bitcoin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/wrapped-bitcoin-tokenized-faster-mined-defi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can be used directly<\/a> in Ethereum&#8217;s DeFi system. WBTCs allow users to earn interest on the bitcoin they lend out via the decentralized lending platforms described above.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prediction markets<\/strong>: Markets for betting on the outcome of future events, such as elections. The goal of DeFi versions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/prediction-markets-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prediction markets<\/a> is to offer the same functionality but without intermediaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-14\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\"><strong>In addition to these apps, new DeFi concepts have sprung up around them:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-15\" class=\"article-list\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Yield farming<\/strong>: For knowledgeable traders who are willing to take on risk, there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/defi-yield-farming-comp-token-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">yield farming<\/a>, where users scan through various DeFi tokens in search of opportunities for larger returns.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Liquidity mining<\/strong>: When DeFi applications entice users to their platform by giving them free tokens. This has been the buzziest form of yield farming yet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Composability<\/strong>: DeFi apps are open source, meaning the code behind them is public for anyone to view. Users can make money off of interest for lending out their money. Compound sets the interest rates algorithmically, so if there\u2019s higher demand to borrow a cryptocurrency, the interest rates will be pushed higher.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-19\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">DeFi lending is collateral-based, meaning in order to take out a loan, a user needs to put up collateral \u2013 often ether, the token that powers Ethereum. That means users don\u2019t give out their identity or associated credit score to take out a loan, which is how normal, non-DeFi loans operate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-20\" class=\"article-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3>Stablecoins<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-21\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">Another form of DeFi is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/tag\/stablecoins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stablecoin<\/a>. Stablecoins peg cryptocurrencies to non-cryptocurrencies, such as the U.S. dollar, in order to keep the price stable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-22\" class=\"article-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3>Prediction markets<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-23\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">One of the oldest DeFi applications\u00a0 on Ethereum is a so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/prediction-markets-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prediction market<\/a>,\u201d where users bet on the outcome of some event, such as an election.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-24\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">The goal of the participants is to make money, though prediction markets can sometimes better predict outcomes than controlled methods, like polling. Centralized prediction markets with good track records in this regard include Intrade and PredictIt. DeFi has the potential to boost interest in prediction markets, which have traditionally been shut down by governments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-25\" class=\"article-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h2>DeFi FAQ<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-26\" class=\"article-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3>How do I make money with DeFi?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-27\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">The value locked up in Ethereum DeFi projects has been exploding, with many users reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/defi-degens-gaming-ethereum-money-legos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">making a lot of money<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-28\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">Using Ethereum-based lending apps, as mentioned above, users can generate \u201cpassive income\u201d by loaning out their money and generating interest from the loans.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/defi-yield-farming-comp-token-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yield farming<\/a>, described above, has the potential for even larger returns, but with larger risk. It allows for users to leverage the lending aspect of DeFi to put their\u00a0crypto assets to work generating the best possible returns. However, these systems tend to be complex and often lack transparency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-29\" class=\"article-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3>Is investing in DeFi safe?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-30\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">No, it\u2019s risky. Many believe DeFi is the future of finance and that investing in the disruptive technology early could lead to massive gains.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-31\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">But it\u2019s difficult for newcomers to separate the good projects from the bad. And there has been plenty of bad.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-33\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">As DeFi has increased in activity and popularity through 2020, many DeFi applications, such as meme coin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/yearn-yam-cryptos-weird-defi-moment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YAM<\/a>, have crashed and burned, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/yams-market-cap-falls-from-60m-to-zero-in-35-minutes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sending<\/a> the market capitalization from $60 million to $0 in 35 minutes. Other DeFi projects, including <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeffKirdeikis\/status\/1301221894385852421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">H<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeffKirdeikis\/status\/1301221894385852421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">o<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeffKirdeikis\/status\/1301221894385852421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tdog<\/a> and Pizza, faced the same fate, and many investors lost a lot of money.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-34\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">In addition, DeFi bugs are unfortunately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/defi-meme-coin-yam-succumbs-to-fatal-rebase-bug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">still <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/exploit-during-ethdenver-reveals-experimental-nature-of-decentralized-finance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">very<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/bug-forces-shutdown-of-bitcoin-backed-ethereum-token-tbtc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> common<\/a>. Smart contracts are powerful, but they can\u2019t be changed once the rules are baked into the protocol, which often makes bugs permanent and thus increasing risk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-35\" class=\"article-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3>When will DeFi go mainstream?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-36\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">While more and more people are being drawn to these DeFi applications, it\u2019s hard to say where they\u2019ll go. Much of that depends on who finds them useful and why. Many believe various DeFi projects have the potential to become <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UniswapProtocol\/status\/1300446158733574148\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the next Robinhood<\/a>, drawing in hordes of new users by making financial applications more inclusive and open to those who don\u2019t traditionally have access to such platforms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-37\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">This financial technology is new, experimental and isn\u2019t without problems, especially with regard to security or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/28-billion-challenge-can-ethereum-scale-meet-demand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scalability<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-38\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">Developers hope to eventually rectify these problems. Ethereum 2.0 could tackle scalability concerns through a concept known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/vitalik-releases-partial-proof-concept-ethereum-sharding-tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sharding<\/a>, a way of splitting the underlying database into smaller pieces that are more manageable for individual users to run.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-39\" class=\"article-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3>How will Ethereum 2.0 impact DeFi?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-40\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">Ethereum 2.0 isn\u2019t a panacea for all of DeFi\u2019s issues, but it\u2019s a start. Other protocols such as Raiden and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/world-computer-new-protocol-supercharge-ethereums-blockchain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TrueBit<\/a> are also in the works to further tackle Ethereum\u2019s scalability issues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-41\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">If and when these solutions fall into place, Ethereum\u2019s DeFi experiments will have an even better chance of becoming real products, potentially even going mainstream.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-42\" class=\"article-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h2>Bitcoin as DeFi<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-43\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">While Ethereum is top dog in the DeFi world, many proponents of Bitcoin share the goal of cutting the middleman out of more complex financial transactions, and they\u2019ve developed ways to do so using the Bitcoin protocol.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"node-44\" class=\"article-pharagraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p class=\"text\">Companies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/bitcoin-defi-japan-smart-contracts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DG Labs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/a-lightning-api-for-bitcoin-futures-data-has-launched\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Suredbits<\/a>, are working on a Bitcoin DeFi technology called discreet log contracts (DLC). DLC offers a way to execute more complex financial contracts, such as derivatives, with the help of Bitcoin. Chainlink aims to bring the power of smart contracts to the real world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Chainlink brings outside data into smart contracts. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/money\/todays-ethereum-price\/\">Ethereum<\/a> Smart contracts can now act on other asset prices, global occurrences and make calls to other APIs. Chainlink makes smart contracts really smart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It also incorporates real-world data. For example, it allows farmers to hedge against a bad season. The smart contracts filtered through Chainlink pay out insurance claims if values in the contract like share price, temperature or rainfall do not meet a certain standard. Instant payments deploy as soon as the program receives the appropriate weather data.
