But 87 people have swum across the Cook Strait from Wellington to the South Island. The record holder is Casey Glover who swam the Strait in 4 hours 37 minutes in 2008.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"This link will take you away from steemit.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cookstraitswim.org.nz\/\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.cookstraitswim.org.nz\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"This link will take you away from steemit.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/sport\/364994\/Cook-Strait-swimming-record-smashed\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/sport\/364994\/Cook-Strait-swimming-record-smashed<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7707-02fce61.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And if we walk down to the beach, from our house here in Wellington, we can see the South Island sitting there on the horizon right in front of us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_20160215_1823186172c.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The South Island has so many amazing places to visit, it\u2019s hard to know where to start. A lot of visitors seem to start by flying into Christchurch (NZ\u2019s third largest city) \u2013 it\u2019s a very flat city with an English feel, and there are even people taking boat rides in the park.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7078-0201bb8.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Unfortunately Christchurch was hit hard by two earthquakes in 2011 and many famous landmarks like the Christchurch cathedral were demolished.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"This link will take you away from steemit.com\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/June_2011_Christchurch_earthquake\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/June_2011_Christchurch_earthquake<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Here is a photo I took of the cathedral before all the destruction happened:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7048-01dbdd7.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Queenstown is another very popular place to visit \u2013 it really is spectacular and has a lot going on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/STD_7451-024ba93.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>(My favourite photographer on Steemit &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/steemit.com\/@daxon\">@daxon<\/a>\u00a0has posted a lot of stunning photos of Queenstown, but check out my pics first because once you see his, my ones just won\u2019t cut the mustard)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Mitre Peak is another popular destination \u2013 it looks amazing, and you can go on a boat trip and watch real dolphins (rather than Steemit ones) playing in the wake of the boat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7316-0289a2a.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">There are also many other less touristy but still great places to see. My favourite South Island city is Dunedin. Like Wellington, it\u2019s built around a compact harbour, and like Wellington, it freaks people out because of its weather reputation. (Wellington is said to be windy, and Dunedin cold.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7189-029767f.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Unlike Wellington, Dunedin has huge areas that are not covered in houses and buildings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7145-0257a77.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It\u2019s New Zealand\u2019s most historic city, with a strong Scottish influence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7163-0225fb0.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Baldwin Street Dunedin is officially the steepest street in the world<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"This link will take you away from steemit.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.viralnova.com\/steepest-street-in-the-world\/\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.viralnova.com\/steepest-street-in-the-world\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7175-02f63df.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Dunedin even has its own castle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7134-02308ba.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7135-0264d61.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">On the West Coast is another amazing place to visit called Punakaiki<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It has Pancake Rock formations and Blowholes!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"This link will take you away from steemit.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.punakaiki.co.nz\/\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.punakaiki.co.nz\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7596-021f1ed.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7569-02e94e2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7611-0222e9a.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7621-02a57c8.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Dunedin and Punakaiki are about as far apart as it\u2019s possible to get in the South Island, but something they share is a sense of spectacular isolation. I know a lot of overseas visitors feel that way about the whole of NZ, but to an inhabitant of Wellington who feels like he lives in the big smoke, the South Island feels like the end of the earth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/STC_7200-02e02b9.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n<em>The coast near Dunedin<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img src=\"https:\/\/steemitimages.com\/640x0\/https:\/\/www.steemimg.com\/images\/2016\/09\/27\/IMG_7720-02796e6.jpg\" \/><br \/>\n<em>The coast near Punakaiki<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The South Island is a lot bigger than it looks on a map, and a full trip all the way round is not something that can be done properly in just a week.
